Southern West Virginia Hot Dog Chili Sauce

A savory and slightly spicy chili sauce perfect for topping hot dogs, inspired by West Virginia’s classic recipe.

For the Crust:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it into small crumbles as it cooks.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and sauté until softened.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, water, chili powder, paprika, cumin, salt, black pepper, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  5. Adjust seasoning to taste and serve warm over hot dogs.
