Easy Homemade Boston Cream Cake – Bakery Style at Home!

A classic bakery-style dessert with moist vanilla cake, rich custard filling, and glossy chocolate ganache topping.

For the Crust:

  • 1 box yellow cake mix (plus required ingredients: eggs, oil, water)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Prepare cake mix according to package directions in two 9-inch round pans. Cool completely.
  2. For custard: Whisk milk, sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in saucepan. Cook over medium heat until thick. Remove from heat; stir in butter and vanilla. Cool completely.
  3. Slice cooled cake layers horizontally. Spread custard between layers and on top (not sides).
  4. For ganache: Heat cream until simmering. Pour over chocolate chips; let sit 5 minutes. Stir until smooth. Pour over cake center, allowing it to drip slightly.
