Black Forest Cake

A timeless classic featuring layers of rich chocolate sponge, whipped cream, and cherries you can’t resist!

For the Crust:

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup strong black coffee, cooled
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 can (21 oz) cherry pie filling
  • Chocolate shavings for garnish

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add eggs, buttermilk, coffee, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  3. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  4. Whip heavy cream with powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  5. Place one cake layer on a plate. Spread with half the whipped cream and top with half the cherry filling. Repeat with second layer.
  6. Garnish with chocolate shavings and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
